She made her professional debut as Ophelia in Hamlet 1957 with the Old Vic Company. Her Shakespearean roles include Viola in Twelfth Night 1969, Lady Macbeth 1976, and Cleopatra 1987. Her films include Wetherby 1985, A Room with a View 1986, and A Handful of Dust 1988. DBE 1988. She is also a versatile comedy actress and has directed Much Ado about Nothing 1988 and John Osborne's Look Back in Anger 1989 for the Renaissance Theatre Company.
